Dr. Oliver Vogel

Computer Vision & Machine Learning – Freelance Engineer

I am a freelance computer vision and machine learning engineer with a PhD in computer science and 15 years of production experience – automotive, medical devices, industry. At the moment I develop classification, detection and inspection pipelines for embedded cameras on Jetson hardware. From understanding the problem to production code, in Python or C++.

Hard computer vision problems

When standard methods fall short, the detection rate has plateaued or it is unclear whether it can be done at all. I start by understanding the problem – often it can be posed more simply than it first appeared – and then deliver a feasibility study, a second opinion or the solution.

Classical computer vision and deep learning from one source

I pick the right tool or combine both. This pays off when data is scarce, real time is required or results must be explainable.

From prototype to production code on the hardware

Classification, detection, assembly verification and completeness checks: training models, bringing them onto the target hardware and running them there in real time – embedded and edge platforms such as NVIDIA Jetson. Also as extra capacity when a team is stretched: quickly productive in large, grown codebases in C++ and Python.

Industries

Automotive  medical devices  industrial quality inspection  surveillance. A selection of projects is on the projects page.
